The Department of English Language and Literature at Gaziantep University is a well-established and reputable department in the South Eastern District of Turkey. The teaching staff of the department are an appropriately diverse group. Their areas of expertise range from theory and criticism to various literary genres as well as language-related subjects. This background lays the foundation for diversification of knowledge and a rich atmosphere for learning. In addition, Gaziantep is one of the modern provinces of South-Eastern Anatolia with its rich history. As an agricultural and industrial hub, it is an export centre for its local products. Aside from a career in teaching, the city offers the English graduates employment opportunities in various positions within industry and international organisations such the United Nations.

The department currently offers a Bachelor of Arts as well as a Master’s degree. BA in English language and literature is designed to help students read literary works, study theories, analyse prose, verse and drama and, thus, develop a critical look at literary and non-literary texts. It gives the students comprehensive knowledge of the literary history of Anglophone literature and the cultural conditions under which it was written. One of the primary aim of the degree is to develop students’ creative and analytical thinking about literature and allow students to study literary texts from different periods of history. The degree also educates students on the workings of both English and an alternative second language outside of literature, thus contributing to students’ proficiency and self-esteem in communication in all kinds of contexts.

In the first year, students are introduced to the various elements and aspects of language, literature and English literary history in courses such as Grammar, Writing, Research Methods, Introduction to Literature, Analysis of Short Story and Poetry. At the same time, they attend compulsory second language classes (German, French or Russian) and experience teaching at school by participating in the Social Awareness Project.

In the second and third years, students are given the chance to study literature from a large selection of genres and periods of British literature. The courses range from Classical Greek and Medieval drama, texts from 16. to 19. century English literature, Shakespeare to Linguistics and a select collection of European literature. In the third year, students can also attend The Teaching Certificate Programme conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Education, so they are certified to be employed at state schools governed by the Ministry of Education and other private institutions in Turkey.

In the final year, the department offers a varied curriculum in modern literary and critical theory, dramatic literature and post-colonial literary culture. These courses enable students to have a good grasp of modern and contemporary literature and allow them to reflect their critical skills in class discussions, written essays and seminars.

The Master’s programme aims to provide students with a deeper and wider perspective on literature, as well as academic skills. Through the courses in the programme, students conduct research, examine works in the light of various theories and develop the ability of producing and disseminating critical knowledge. Graduates from the fields of English Language and Literature, American Culture and Literature, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, English Language Teaching and Translation can apply to our programme to enhance their critical thinking skills, carry out textual analysis and advance their writing and communication skills.

Our programmes train individuals who can communicate effectively and reason deeply about the ideas and philosophies through an intense training in both culture and literature. We believe that literature reflects the profundity of human existence and complexities of socio-political phenomena that have shaped and continue to shape our world. Our mission is to challenge students to go beyond their potentials by expanding their knowledge and imaginations and, thus, to produce next generations who can make meaningful contribution to the society.
