General Information

The Biology Department was established in 2000 in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Bachelor and Master of Science programmes started in the 2000-2001 academic year, while PhD and evening education programmes were offered first in 2005-2006 and 2007-2008 academic years, respectively. Today, the department offers the formal education programme but the evening education is not available any more.

Undergraduate programme offers mandatory courses in the first 6 semesters and mainly elective courses in the 7th and 8th semesters.  Our main aim is to increase employment opportunity of our graduate students in the fields of education, food and drug industry, aggriculture, forestry and health by developing their basic knowledge and practical skills.

The Department has four sub-disciplines as Botany, General Biology, Molecular Biology and Zoology and the Academic Staff consists of  4 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 4 Asisstant Professors, 4 Research Asistants and 1 Biologist.

The Department of Biology offers MSc by research and PhD degrees in Biology within the  the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Science. Our department also supports and collaborates with the Biochemical Science and Technology Msc programme.


Department of Biology has many research laboratories including also a Herbarium and a Zoology Museum with a wide range of collection.

Basic research areas in the Dept. of Biology:

Botany: Plant physiology, plant stress physiology, plant systematics, mycology, environmental biology and germination physiology.

General Biology: Ecology, environmental biotechnology, soil biology, bioremediation, soil erosion, vegetation studies and ecological aggriculture.

Molecular Biology: Plant molecular biology and biotechnology, plant tissue culture, molecular interactions of plant-pathogen, molecular biology and genetics of the hereditary disorders and cancer and population genetics.

Zoology: Systematics of Insecta and Arachnida, animal physiology and parasitology.
