Division of Neonatology has been in service of newborns and prematures under the dept. of pediatrics since the establishment of our faculty with the pioneering of Dr. Yavuz Coşkun ve Dr. Ziya Bayraktaroğlu.Until 2000 our unit serviced within the old maternity house. After year 2000 our unit started to service as a distinct unit with its highly experienced caregivers, nurses and modern equipments.
In time, with the increasing support of our academics the number of incubators and ventilators were increased and has been giving service with 10 incubators, 4 open beds and for ventilators up until now. Dr. Ercan Sivasli ,one of our hospital's personnel, started his subspecialty in Neonatology in Hacettepe University Neonatology Unit in 2003 and finished in March 2006. After finishing his subspecialty he returned to Gaziantep University and undertook the responsibility of Newborn Unit. In May 2006, Premature Polyclinics and in June 2006, our Newborn Unit and Newborn Intensive Care Unit opened
In our new unit, there are currently 4 ventilators 1 volume controlled ventilator, 1 high frequency oscillatory and 1 transport ventilator. Our unit has been servicing with 17 incubators, 4 open beds and 9 ventilators. In our unit medicine, pediatrics and neonatology students receives training. Besides, Newborn Intensive Care trainings are given to doctors and caregivers working in state hospitals and private hospitals in our city. Thus the the quality of newborn intensive care units and caregivers in our city will be enhanced.
We reached the global standarts of baby's total parenteral nutrition with the setup of our fully sterile positive pressure total parenteral nutrition room since 2008.
In 2009, laminer flow treatment cabin was set up for reducing the infection risk to minimum while preparing the baby's parenteral treatment.In 2010, all classical oxygen systems were replaced with the mixer type oxygen systems in order to prevent the premature babies from retinopathy (ROP) so it is possible to adjust the oxygen concentration for premature babies.
