General Information
The Department of Geography at Gaziantep University was founded to offer a four-year undergraduate programme within the body of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 2014. The department accepted its first students in 2015-2016 academic year. Courses are conducted in a common framework in the department under two subfields: Physical Geography and Human Geography. Courses covering the subjects of Geomorphology, Climatology, Hydrography and Biogeography constitute the key areas of Physical Geography. In Human Geography, topics such as population, settlements, city and urbanization, culture, regional development, industry, energy, tourism, economy, The European Union (EU) and geopolitical location are investigated. In addition, the department provides a comprehensive two-year education in the field of geographical mapping including topics such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS), the usage and significance of which have substantially increased and becomehighlypopular technological tools and technical fields today. Therefore, our graduates will have theopportunity to find employment in the stated areas. Geography, as the science of space and place, studies the mutual relationship between human activities and natural phenomena as well as occurences taking place in different parts of the World. Geography is the only scientific discipline that brings location, environment and humans together. It is also unique in terms of its connections with both social and natural sciences. In other words, geography is a bicultural discipline, in which the investigation of the factors shaping cultures and economies of different communities falls into the scope of Human Geography within the field of Social Sciences, whereas the investigation of the factors shaping landscape and specific environmental processes falls into the scope of Physical Geography within the field of Physical Geography. Human Geography, which focuses on the locational aspects of human life, is a key field that examines the distribution of human beings and their activities and how they perceive, establish, develop and use the same environmental space. Physical Geography, on the other hand, is concerned with landscape, climate, vegetation cover, water and environmental problems. Besides, global climate change, drought, erosion, desertification, forest fires and deforestation, loss of biodiversity, contamination of surface and ground waters and floods are among the areas of research in Physical Geography. Geography is an interdisciplinary science that offers various professional opportunities and has close affiliations with fields such as Sociology, Psychology, Economy, History, Politics and International Relations, Statistics as well as Physics. Accordingly, students who successfully complete all the required courses earn a Bachelor's degree in Geography from a department that takes the needs of society and latest developments into consideration.
