Review of quantum mechanics. The density operator. Dipole transitions. Hamiltonian of an atom in electromagnetic field. Electric dipole interaction. Parity. Equations of motion for the electric dipole transition and for the magnetic dipole spin (1/2) system. Absorption, dispersion, saturation. Tensor properties of the susceptibility. Rate equations. Brief survey of the laser.
